Francisco González Giraldo

Guitar and voice

Francisco González Giraldo was born in Columbia. His introduction to music came from his father, Francisco González and also Olga González. Later he travelled to Mexico where he made an ethno-musicological study of the music of Veracruz. He then entered the National School of Music of Mexico’s National Autonomous University where he studied composition with Juan Antonio Rosado. He also participated in composition workshops by Rodolfo Halffter and Federico Ibarra Groth while at the same time studying classical guitar after meeting Abel Carlevaro.

In 1982, he settled in France where he studied composition with Katori Makino and classical guitar with Francis Verba in Paris.


Francisco González Giraldo has published many articles in specialized magazines such as Les Cahiers de la Guitare and has often held conferences on the guitar and Latin American music. He has made many recordings, especially with the Russian violinist Sasha Rozhdestvensky and the Ambar Group, Alexis Cardenas and the Recoveco Ensemble but also Roberto Alagna, Arielle Dombasle, Lila Downs, Marthe Keller, Jorge Lopez, Alondra de la Parra, Cristóbal Soto, etc.

His compositions are published by Les Éditions Henry Lemoine and Les Éditions Robert Martin.

Since 2001, he has leaded the Tribune de la Musique, with Oscar Barahona, Nelson Gómez and Michel Plisson at the Maison de l’Amérique Latine in Paris.

On November 25, 2021, the inauguration of his concert for violin and orchestra « Abya Yala » (Cinco Danzas Concertantes) took place, at the Colón Theater in Bogotá, with the National Symphonic Orchestra, and the Ambar Group.
